Indian media has reported that President Dr. Muizzu will embark on a state visit to India from October 7th to 9th, 2024. During this visit, he is expected to meet with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Although there have been no formal statements from the Maldivian government, various Indian news outlets have confirmed the schedule for this three-day trip.
Recent efforts have indicated a thawing in relations between the Maldives and India, with the Maldivian government actively seeking to improve ties. Notably, a promotional roadshow for Maldivian tourism, featuring Tourism Minister Faisal, took place in Bengaluru, Mumbai, and New Delhi in August 2024. The initiative was well-received and aimed at enhancing relations with Indian tour operators and travel agents.
This will mark Dr. Muizzu’s second trip to India this year; he previously attended the oath-taking ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi in June. Additionally, Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. Jaishankar visited the Maldives in August, further signaling the strengthening of bilateral relations.
It is important to note that two Maldivian deputy ministers, who made controversial comments regarding Prime Minister Modi and India, were removed from their positions in August. Furthermore, India has agreed to defer the repayment of a $50 million loan for an additional year.
With President Dr. Muizzu’s upcoming trip, there is optimism for increased engagement and improved relations between the Maldives and India.
