In a recent post on X, Local Government Minister Adam Shareef affirmed the government's commitment to financially empower local councils and ensure that financial benefits reach the public. He announced that a dedicated committee is currently assessing the proposals submitted by various local councils regarding uninhabited islands.
Minister Shareef indicated that these evaluations are expected to conclude within the week.
Only three councils have submitted proposals for the uninhabited islands: Raa Atoll Inguraidhoo Council, Dhaalu Atoll Kuda Huvadhoo Council, and Laamu Atoll Maavashu Council.
The Kuda Huvadhoo Council has requested Minimasgaliaa Island, while the Inguraidhoo Council is seeking Neyo Island. Additionally, Maavashu Council has proposed Bodumaabulhali Island.
According to the Decentralisation Act, councils are entitled to uninhabited islands within their jurisdiction. However, these allocations will be made in addition to existing entitlements.
The Local Government Ministry has commenced its evaluations of the proposals, marking a significant step in promoting local development and engagement with uninhabited islands.
