Minister of Construction and Infrastructure, Dr. Abdulla Muthalib, who holds a PhD in Civil Engineering, shared insights on media regarding the ambitious announcement made by President Dr. Muizzu to construct a transparent underwater tunnel between Rasmale’ and Male’ City.

He described this initiative as a bold vision, drawing parallels to President John F. Kennedy’s 1969 declaration to send humans to the Moon.

Dr. Muthalib emphasized that, while there are currently no existing technologies worldwide capable of similar projects with transparent / see through tunnel under the sea, it is commendable that President Muizzu possesses the vision and courage to propose such an extraordinary undertaking. The Minister underscored that this endeavor requires significant innovation and a willingness to explore uncharted territories.

Although Dr. Muthalib was unable to provide specific timelines for the tunnel project, he stated that comprehensive studies need to be conducted to assess its feasibility. Yet, he reiterated his admiration for President Muizzu's ambition and willingness to embrace cutting-edge technologies.

While there exist various underwater tunnels globally, none feature transparent designs that allow visibility through the structure.

While announcing his vision, President Dr. Muizzu has indicated that preliminary communications and studies for the tunnel have commenced, highlighting the potential to attract more tourists to the nation upon its implementation.

This visionary project has the potential to redefine transportation in the Maldives and can serve as a symbol of progress and innovation, much like the monumental achievements in space exploration that marked a pivotal moment in history.
