On 16 November 2024, at 14:35 MVT, a contract to develop 1,000 residential flats in Baa Atoll Eydhafushi was awarded to the Chinese company Sinohydro at a ceremony held at the President's Office.
The project will involve the construction of twelve 15-storey towers, offering both three-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments. Specifically, the plan includes 336 three-bedroom flats and 672 two-bedroom flats.
After signing the agreement, Minister of Construction Dr. Abdulla Muththalib explained that Eydhafushi is being developed as an urban center, making vertical construction crucial for efficient land use.
Dr. Muththalib emphasized Eydhafushi’s strategic role as a central hub in Baa Atoll, supporting the consolidation of population and development. He also noted that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has committed to providing housing for tourism sector workers, as there are many resorts around the island.
He highlighted Eydhafushi’s suitability for the housing project, citing its established higher education institutions, reliable healthcare services, and convenient sea and air access. “With well-developed education, health, and transportation services, Eydhafushi is an ideal location for the government’s housing project,” he said.
The minister expressed optimism about securing financing for the project in the coming year, with hopes that residents could move into the flats by the end of the current term.
