Strengthening Economic Ties: Launch of the Sri Lanka Business Council of the Maldives to Unlock Bilateral Opportunities

The Sri Lanka Business Council of the Maldives (SLBCM) was officially inaugurated on November 12, 2024, at Hotel Jen Male’. The event gathered key figures, including ministers, ambassadors, business leaders, and dignitaries from Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Conceptualized and led by Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to the Maldives, His Excellency Ranga Goonawardena, the Council aims to strengthen economic ties and foster new opportunities between the two nations.


Affiliated with the Sri Lanka High Commission, the SLBCM is positioned as a vital facilitator of trade, investment, and business collaborations. His Excellency Mohamed Saeed, Minister of Economic Development and Trade, lauded the initiative as a significant step in enhancing bilateral trade, which currently exceeds $160 million annually. He emphasized its potential to create jobs, drive innovation, and expand economic synergy.


High Commissioner Goonawardena described the Council as a personal priority, envisioning it as a bridge to opportunities and prosperity for both countries. SLBCM President Duminda Rathnadiwakara highlighted its focus on connecting business communities and fostering accessible collaboration for enterprises.


The Council’s 14-member Executive Committee includes 25 honorary members from Maldivian business circles, reflecting its commitment to building a robust network for bilateral growth. Established at a strategic time, SLBCM aims to facilitate partnerships, support entrepreneurs, and attract investments, strengthening economic ties and promoting mutual prosperity.
