Marine Science is now being taught at the A Level in the Maldives for the first time. The Centre for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) introduced the subject last September and officially celebrated its launch yesterday. Currently, CHSE is the only institution in the Maldives offering Marine Science at the A Level.
The inaugural event was graced by Dr. Ahmed Riyaz Jauhary, a marine biologist from the Maldives Marine Research Institute. CHSE Principal Abdulla Didi revealed that 14 students have enrolled in the subject, with an additional seven students studying it at CHSE’s Hulhumalé campus.
The introduction of Marine Science marks a significant milestone, coming 40 years after the launch of Fisheries Science in the Maldives. Fisheries Science was first taught in 1984 at Majeedhiyya School and Aminiya School, with the inaugural O Level examination held in 1987.
In addition to Marine Science, CHSE offers a diverse range of subjects, including Marine Biology, Travel and Tourism, Psychology, and Computer Science.
