The investigation into the tragic death of Zakiyya Moosa, a 50-year-old woman found with severe injuries outside her home in Noonu Atoll Holhudhoo, remains ongoing. Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau confirmed that a team of investigators is still active on the island, working to resolve the case.
Zakiyya’s body was discovered on September 10 near her home's kitchen, close to a storage area. Municipal workers collecting garbage found her with a deeply slashed throat, to the extent that her head was nearly severed. A knife was found nearby. While some speculate the injuries could be self-inflicted, many Holhudhoo residents question this possibility. Authorities have yet to classify the incident as a murder, and no arrests have been made.
Over two months after her death, Holhudhoo residents staged protests on Monday, demanding justice for Zakiyya and urging authorities to expedite the investigation.
Commissioner Shujau assured Mihaaru News that police have been actively pursuing leads since the case was reported. "A lot has been achieved in the past two months, including verifying information related to the case. Police will reveal information regarding this very soon," he said.
Zakiyya is survived by her husband and two sons—one residing in Malé, while the other lives in the same household with his wife and child.
The case has drawn widespread attention, with calls for clarity and accountability as the community mourns Zakiyya’s untimely death.
