A smoking cessation helpline, "Quit Line," has been established to support individuals in the Maldives who wish to quit smoking. This initiative aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's decision on October 17 last year to expand cessation services throughout the country.

Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim announced the launch of the 24/7 hotline, 1676, during a meeting at the Ministry of Health. The helpline will provide assistance to those seeking to quit smoking, offering access to resources such as nicotine patches, gum, and other treatment options.

To ensure effective service delivery, the government has already trained the necessary technical staff and is preparing to roll out tobacco cessation clinics on every island. These services are expected to be operational across the Maldives in the coming months.

In a cabinet meeting held on Sunday, the government approved a four-year plan to phase out tobacco use nationwide. As part of the strategy, tobacco cessation services will be integrated under Preventive Healthcare in all medical facilities. Efforts to encourage a tobacco-free society will include incentives, such as awarding prizes to islands that achieve tobacco-free community status.

Additionally, economic measures have been introduced to curb tobacco use. The specific tax rate on tobacco products like cigarettes has increased from MVR 3 to MVR 8, and the ad valorem rate has been raised by 50%.

These initiatives reflect the Maldives' commitment to reducing tobacco consumption and promoting public health.
