Mayor of Male', Adam Azim, has clarified the responsibilities for maintaining Rasfannu Beach and nearby areas, highlighting that the upkeep of parks and recreational spaces generally falls under the Male' City Council, while Rasfannu Beach is maintained by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

Following a video published by Mihaaru showcasing the deteriorating condition of Rasfannu Beach, Mayor Azim explained that the maintenance of huts and the barbecue area at Rasfannu is specifically MTCC’s responsibility. He noted that a kiosk operating at the site is leased to MTCC in exchange for repair work conducted in the area, with the rental income directed to the company.

“As there is an agreement in place, we refrain from working on the site out of respect for that. However, we continue to clean the trash at Rasfannu,” Azim stated.

The maintenance of the Pomelo Restaurant structure and the showers at Rasfannu, however, falls under the jurisdiction of Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC). Additionally, a private contractor has been engaged to maintain the area stretching from Rasfannu to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

Mayor Azim also raised concerns about the Tsunami Monument area, which is experiencing significant deterioration. He indicated that the site requires infrastructure repairs rather than just maintenance. However, the City Council currently lacks the budget for such extensive work. “If the budget is arranged, the Council can undertake the project,” he added.

To address the ongoing concerns, Mayor Azim confirmed that a letter would be sent to MTCC urging action on the repair and maintenance of Rasfannu Beach.
