The government has announced plans to introduce psychiatry and speech therapy services in all atoll hospitals, aiming to address the growing prevalence of mental health issues in the Maldives.

In a circular issued by Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, it was noted that the rise in mental health conditions is leading to an increase in related challenges such as suicide and disabilities. Currently, these services are only available in Male’ region hospitals and level 3 regional hospitals, leaving many residents in the islands without access.

The new policy, finalized on Saturday, seeks to ease access to psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, therapists, and social workers for those living in the islands. By expanding these services to level 2 hospitals, the government aims to reduce waiting times and improve mental health care accessibility.

The services are set to be introduced in Haa Alif Atoll Hospital, Shaviyani Atoll Hospital, Noonu Atoll Hospital, Baa Atoll Hospital, Lhaviyani Atoll Hospital, Faafu Atoll Hospital, Dhaalu Atoll Hospital, Thaa Atoll Hospital, Gaafu Alif Atoll Hospital, and Fuvahmulah Hospital by early next year.
