From Wednesday, only people who have gotten at least the first dose of a coronavirus vaccination will be allowed to utilize public transportation in the Maldives.

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has notified all public transportation authorities and operators to verify that consumers meet Health Protection Agency (HPA) regulations; HPA had already announced limitations on unvaccinated persons beginning September 1.

All public transportation, including land, sea, and domestic air travel, is prohibited for persons who are eligible for immunization but have not received at least the first dosage.

From September onwards, any civil servants who are unable to give a Covid-19 vaccine for any reason will be obliged to undertake Covid-19 testing on a bi-weekly schedule.

In addition, employees who have been recommended against vaccination owing to pre-existing medical issues by a Maldives-registered medical doctor are encouraged to get immunized when they can.

This announcement comes at a time when the government is aiming to have 90 per cent of those eligible vaccinated by August 31st.

On February 1, the government initiated a countrywide vaccination campaign against Covid-19. On top of that, vaccination efforts for youngsters aged 12 to 17 began on August 15, shortly after Pfizer's vaccine was approved for this age range.
