Hassan Isaam, a 30-year-old man from ViliMale', has been remanded in custody for 15 days following his arrest for snatching a gold necklace from a female motorist on Alikilegefaanu Magu.
Isaam, who initially confessed to the crime, claimed in court that he no longer possesses the stolen necklace but expressed willingness to pay compensation. His arrest stemmed from a mugging incident captured on CCTV, where he is seen snatching the necklace and attempting to grab the victim’s handbag before fleeing the scene on a motorcycle.
During his initial remand hearing, Isaam was accused of carrying a sharp weapon, as police discovered a two-inch knife on him. Despite this, the Criminal Court noted that no evidence had been presented to specify the timing or details of the incident.
With his previous seven-day remand nearing its end, police presented new evidence, including CCTV footage and a statement, leading to the extension of his custody. Isaam has a history of prior offenses, further contributing to the court's decision.
Videos circulating on social media show the dramatic scene of the necklace being snatched, with the victim backing away in fear as a crowd begins to gather. Isaam, who had been wearing a helmet to conceal his identity, fled the area on his motorcycle.
