The family of a 19-year-old motorist critically injured in a collision with a police car on Thursday night in Hulhumale' Phase 2 has disputed aspects of the police's account of the incident.

According to the police, the accident occurred at 01:50 hrs on Nirolhu Magu when a speeding motorcycle, traveling north to south, collided with a police car crossing the intersection from east to west. However, citing eyewitness accounts, the family claims the police car was not properly positioned to be crossing the intersection, suggesting possible police negligence.

Police have stated that their investigation will assess whether the driver of the police car was at fault. They also noted that the victim's license had reportedly been seized the previous Saturday for violations of the Land Transport Act.

The victim’s brother refuted this claim, asserting that while police had fined the owner of a different motorcycle the youth had been riding for illegal modifications, no mention had been made of a license seizure. "If his license had been seized, he would not have been driving. He is a quiet, reserved child," the brother said.

The injured youth, identified as an employee of Maldives Customs Service and an IT student, remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit. He is on ventilator support and has yet to regain consciousness.

The family shared that the youth had previously undergone a nine-hour surgery for a severe head injury sustained in school, expressing deep concern over his current state. "We did not think we would get him back then, but by Allah's grace, he survived. And now this has happened," the brother said.

The family plans to request documentation from the police to verify the claim regarding the license seizure. Meanwhile, they await updates on the investigation and the youth's recovery.
