The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has reported flooding caused by heavy rain and swell waves across six islands, with the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) stepping in to provide assistance.
Among the affected islands, Shaviyani Atoll Narudhoo has suffered the most significant damage due to the swell waves. Other impacted islands include Faafu Atoll Nilandhoo, Faafu Atoll Magoodhoo, Dhaalu Atoll Kudahuvadhoo, and Dhaalu Atoll Meedhoo.
According to NDMA, no instances requiring shelter or humanitarian aid have been reported so far.
Narudhoo Council President Mohamed Mustharsid highlighted that a large part of the island has been flooded, with water entering 12 homes. The flooding has caused damage to household items and plants. He noted that while the island experiences swell waves during this monsoon season annually, the extent of damage is greater this year due to the absence of a seawall outside the harbor.
The Maldives Meteorological Service has forecast that the adverse weather conditions, including heavy rain and swell waves, will persist through Sunday.
