According to an official from the MET Office, Malé received 160mm of rain in the past 24 hours, with the heaviest downpour occurring between 17:00 and 18:00, recording 60mm of rainfall within that hour. This marks a new record for rainfall in a single hour in the capital.
The previous record for Malé was 200mm of rainfall in 24 hours. Meanwhile, neighboring Hulhulé recorded 163mm of rain in the past 24 hours.
Heavy rainfall has affected large parts of the country over the past day, leading to flooding in several islands. Police and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) have been deployed to assist those impacted by the flooding.
The MET Office forecasts continued rain across the Maldives in the coming day, with adverse weather conditions expected to persist through Sunday. Residents are advised to take precautions and remain alert to weather updates.
