India’s Minister of External Affairs, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, has emphasized that the Maldives is a prime example of India’s Neighbourhood First policy. His remarks came during an official visit by Maldives’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, to India.

Highlighting India’s ongoing support for the Maldives amid its financial and economic challenges, Dr. Jaishankar referenced key assistance measures. These include the $400 million currency swap facility and extensions on treasury bills purchased by the State Bank of India, both granted during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s recent state visit to India.

“I hope this assistance, provided in light of the strong India-Maldives relations, has helped to somewhat alleviate your troubles,” Dr. Jaishankar stated. “It is clear that India always stands with the Maldives, which is the clearest example of our Neighbourhood First policy.”

Following their discussions, the two ministers signed the 'High Impact Community Development Projects' agreement, further solidifying bilateral cooperation. This agreement underscores India’s commitment to supporting community development initiatives in the Maldives and strengthening ties between the two nations.
