President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has emphasized the potential of the Maldivian fisheries sector to bring prosperity to its people, provided adequate effort and resources are directed towards its development. During a visit to GA. Dhevvadhoo, his final stop in an ongoing trip to Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu atolls, the president outlined his government’s plans to support the sector and address pressing island concerns.
President Muizzu assured Dhevvadhoo residents of the government’s full support in resolving critical issues such as island erosion, harbor development, and waste management. He stated that tackling these problems would not only improve living conditions but also strengthen the fisheries sector.
Acknowledging requests from the island council’s vice-president, Ahmed Fazhad, the president promised to fulfill his campaign pledge to establish a city hotel on the island after conducting feasibility studies. However, he did not comment on the council’s request to develop an airport.
The president highlighted the importance of fulfilling pledges made to fishermen, including clearing payments for fish purchases within 48 hours. He revealed plans to initiate several projects—funded through foreign assistance and the government budget—to expand the fisheries sector and encourage broader participation in the industry.
“The fisheries sector is in our hands. If proper effort is put in, it can become the largest contributor to GDP and enrich our people. The government is working with fishermen, and this collaboration will yield even better results in the future,” said President Muizzu.
He noted that the fisheries sector remains insulated from global crises, making it a stable and sustainable industry for the nation.
President Muizzu shared a roadmap for Dhevvadhoo’s development, including:
The president assured residents that these projects, aligned with their expectations, would benefit families and future generations. He reiterated his commitment to engaging directly with the people, saying, “I want to come to you and listen to what you want. My aim is to work as the people wish.”
