The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has called on the public to take necessary precautions as the Maldives prepares for severe weather conditions starting today.

According to the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET), a low-pressure system in the southwestern Bay of Bengal, east of the Maldives, is forecasted to move westward, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and rough seas from January 13 to January 18. The northern and central regions are particularly at risk of storm surges and turbulent conditions.

To minimize potential damage, the NDMA has outlined several precautionary measures:

  • Flood Prevention: Protect homes from flooding by placing sandbags or similar barriers at doorways and relocating food supplies and household appliances to higher ground.

  • Vehicle Safety: Avoid parking motorcycles and vehicles in flood-prone areas.

  • Business Protection: Secure valuable goods and equipment in shops, warehouses, and restaurants to prevent water damage.

  • Strong Wind Preparedness: Safeguard items that could be displaced by high winds and unplug electrical appliances when not in use.

  • Essential Supplies: Stockpile staple foods and other essentials to avoid shortages during the period of severe weather.

  • Sea Travel Advisory: Those planning sea travel should seek updated weather information from relevant authorities before departure.

  • Driving Restrictions: Heavy vehicles are advised not to operate in flooded areas, particularly in Male’ City.

This alert follows significant weather-related damages earlier this year. On January 3, torrential rains caused widespread flooding across Male’, severely impacting homes and properties.

With this latest warning, the NDMA emphasizes proactive measures to safeguard lives, property, and essential resources during the anticipated adverse weather conditions.
