STELCO has received approval to install CCTV cameras to monitor electrical transformers in Hulhumalé Phase 2, addressing growing concerns over theft and vandalism.

Ahmed Mohamed, STELCO's media official, confirmed to Mihaaru that the company had previously sought permission for the installations during the tenure of the former Managing Director of Housing Development Corporation (HDC). The initial request was unsuccessful, but discussions with the current HDC MD have led to approval, and preparations for the installations are now underway.

The power supply project for Hulhumalé Phase 2, awarded to a Chinese company for USD 70 million during former President Abdulla Yameen's administration, remains incomplete. As a result, the network has not yet been officially handed over to STELCO, which initially bid for but did not secure the project.

The lack of security around the transformers has led to repeated incidents of theft and vandalism. Just last Tuesday, a STELCO employee interrupted an attempted cable theft at a transformer, during which the suspects attacked him with a wrench, causing head and mouth injuries.

In another alarming incident last year, a person attempting to steal from the transformers died from electrocution.

Currently, transformers maintained by STELCO in Malé and Hulhumalé Phase 1 are housed in high-walled, locked enclosures monitored by CCTV cameras. Access is strictly regulated, with STELCO employees following special procedures and safety measures.

The addition of CCTV cameras in Hulhumalé Phase 2 aims to enhance security, mitigate theft, and ensure the safety of personnel and infrastructure.
