The Air Quality Monitoring System in Vilimalé has recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 156, indicating hazardous conditions in the greater Malé area. The system, located at the Maldives National University's Centre for Maritime Studies, highlights a concerning deterioration in air quality over recent days.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has issued guidelines to minimize exposure to polluted air:

  • Limit outdoor activities.

  • Wear masks when going out.

  • Keep doors and windows closed to prevent polluted air from entering homes.

  • Vulnerable groups, including individuals with lung or heart conditions, pregnant women, senior citizens, children, and infants, are advised to stay indoors.

  • Avoid outdoor sports and exercises.

Air quality in other areas is also affected but less severe. The Shaviyani Atoll Council reported an AQI of 76, and Laamu Atoll Gan recorded 82. These levels pose risks to sensitive groups, who should take precautions.
