The issuance of national identity cards and passports has been introduced in Raa Atoll Ungoofaaru, the administrative capital of the atoll.

The new service was inaugurated by Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusan, during his visit to Raa Atoll as part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s ongoing official tour.

Apart from the capital Malé, passport services are now available in Hulhumalé Phase 1, Hulhumalé Phase 2, Vilimalé, Laamu Atoll Fonadhoo, and Dhaalu Atoll Kudahuvadhoo. Similarly, ID card issuance services are offered in Malé, Hulhumalé Phase 1, Hulhumalé Phase 2, Vilimalé, and Haa Dhaalu Atoll Kulhudhuffushi.

The government has announced plans to expand these services across the country. In November 2023, a roadmap was published outlining how the services will be rolled out nationwide. Minister Ihusan has previously noted that the primary challenge in expanding these services is establishing a secure system to maintain confidentiality for documents like passports and ID cards, but he remains confident in overcoming these obstacles.

In addition to this development, Ungoofaaru Council signed an agreement with the Maldives Islamic Bank to establish a sales center and ATM on the island. The island already has banking services available through the Bank of Maldives.
