President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced that the development of a yacht marina in Haa Alifu Uligan, a frequent docking point for foreign yachts, would commence within six months.
His remarks were made during a meeting with the people of Uligan, the final stop of his three-day visit to the islands of Haa Alifu Atoll. Addressing the locals, the President highlighted Uligan’s long-standing popularity among yachts and confirmed that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) had been signed with Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) to establish a yacht marina.
Referring to discussions with the island council, he stated that MPL had assured them the project’s development would begin within six months.
“A destination for yachts—this has been a reality for ages. There is an MoU with MPL, and, God willing, we hope all phases, including financing and detailed work, will be completed,” President Muizzu said. He emphasized the government’s intention to make this project a sustainable and expanding economic opportunity for Uligan.
MPL’s CEO, Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim, stated that the yacht marina would bring significant financial benefits to both Uligan and the entire atoll. He also revealed that companies from Turkey and China had shown interest in constructing the marina. However, even if developed under contract financing by foreign parties, MPL would be responsible for its operation.
Currently, 100–150 yachts dock in Uligan annually, but adequate services have not been provided to them.
