Environment Minister Ibrahim Thoriq has assured that he is fully capable of managing the responsibilities of both the environment and tourism ministries following their recent merger. The restructuring came after the dismissal of former Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal late last week.
In his first interview since assuming his expanded role, Thoriq told Mihaaru that experienced professionals in both sectors would ensure the successful execution of the ministry’s mandates. He expressed confidence that, with their support, the transition would be smooth.
Thoriq noted that environmental regulations were already in place within the Ministry of Tourism and stated his intention to restructure policies after gaining a deeper understanding of the existing framework.
“I have been in charge of the tourism ministry for about 48 hours. We are now identifying and studying the changes that need to be made. I believe this is possible,” he said.
He emphasized that the Maldives’ natural beauty is a key attraction for tourists, making environmental conservation integral to tourism. The merged ministries, he added, would allow for a more streamlined approach to sustainability.
“It will be easier for us to do what resorts do for sustainability,” Thoriq said, highlighting the synergy between tourism and environmental efforts.
