The High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to the Maldives, Nicholas David Low, and the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, Ishigami Rumiko, presented their Letters of Credence to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in a formal ceremony held this morning at the President’s Office.
The envoys were escorted from Republic Square to the President’s Office in a traditional “Haiykolhu” cultural procession, accompanied by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Drum and Trumpet Band.
Following the ceremony, President Muizzu and High Commissioner Low discussed avenues for strengthening bilateral relations between the Maldives and the United Kingdom. Their conversation focused on cooperation in higher education, tourism, and climate change mitigation efforts. Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and the UK were first established on July 26, 1965.
In a separate meeting, President Muizzu and Ambassador Ishigami explored potential collaborations between the Maldives and Japan. Discussions centered on disaster management assistance and renewable energy initiatives. President Muizzu expressed his appreciation for Japan’s continued support in the Maldives’ development efforts, and both reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral ties. The Maldives and Japan established diplomatic relations on November 14, 1967.
