The newly published Tobacco Control General Regulations now empower the Maldives Police to seize and destroy vaping devices prohibited under the Tobacco Control Act.
Since December 15 last year, the import and use of vapes have been banned in the Maldives. While existing laws imposed fines for possession or sale, they did not previously grant law enforcement the power to confiscate already imported vaping devices.
Under the new regulations, gazetted by the Ministry of Health, police can now confiscate any vaping devices or related items found in possession or use. If such items are discovered during a search—whether conducted under a court order or otherwise—they may be seized and will not be returned. Authorities are also authorized to destroy them.
Individuals found in possession of a vape device will face a MVR 2,000 fine, while those who refuse to surrender the items to the police may be fined MVR 50,000.
Since the vaping ban took effect, police have already fined 29 individuals for violations.
With these new enforcement powers, authorities aim to strengthen efforts to curb vaping in the Maldives.
