The Maldives has called on the international community to go beyond rebuilding destroyed structures and focus on restoring the rights, human dignity, and livelihoods of the Palestinian people. Speaking at the high-level segment of the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullah Khaleel emphasized that merely condemning Israel’s ongoing attacks on Gaza is not enough.
Dr. Khaleel stated that the global response to the crisis is a crucial test of the world’s commitment to upholding the principles of the United Nations, justice, and human dignity. While welcoming the current ceasefire agreement in Gaza, he stressed that it is not a permanent solution to the conflict.
"Beyond rebuilding destroyed buildings, the international community needs to work more to ensure the rights, human dignity, and livelihoods of the Palestinian people are restored," he urged.
The Foreign Minister also reaffirmed the Maldivian government’s commitment to protecting international human rights treaties and ensuring the rights of its citizens. He highlighted the Maldives’ contributions as a member of the Human Rights Council, including its role in establishing a voluntary trust fund to support small island developing states in participating in the Council’s work.
Additionally, Dr. Khaleel underscored the Maldives’ leadership in recognizing a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment as a fundamental human right. He noted the government's focus on key social issues, including gender equality, adequate housing, increased participation of people with disabilities in society, and mitigating the effects of climate change.
The 58th session of the Human Rights Council is taking place in Geneva from February 24 to April 4. The Maldives is serving as a member of the Council from 2023 until the end of 2025.
