Water supply has been disrupted in Laamu Atoll Fonadhoo due to technical difficulties at the local water plant.
Fonadhoo Council President, Ahmed Riyaz, informed Mihaaru News that water production has been halted for over a week due to issues at the plant. He mentioned that the problem was raised with Fenaka last week.
Riyaz added that the water stored in the plant has been fully consumed, leaving households that rely entirely on the water supply facing significant challenges.
While many of the island’s 3,000 residents also have access to well water, which supplements the Fenaka supply, some remain solely dependent on the plant.
Riyaz explained that the water plant ran dry late last night, causing hardships for certain residents.
"Households with water motors will still have access to water, and most people have that. However, there are a few who rely entirely on the plant's supply," he said.
"It may not seem like a major issue to everyone, but for those who depend solely on the plant, it is certainly a problem," he added.
In a post on X, Fenaka confirmed that the water supply to the island has been temporarily halted due to technical issues at the plant. They also stated that efforts are underway to transport the necessary resources from Malé to Fonadhoo for repairs.
