The Local Government Authority (LGA) has initiated an inquiry into the Thinadhoo City Council following several complaints. This decision was officially communicated in a letter from the LGA to Mayor Saudh Ali on March 2, 2025.

A dedicated team from the LGA arrived in Thinadhoo on March 9, 2025 to conduct the investigation and will remain in the city until March 13, 2025. The team is composed of the LGA's Director, two Assistant Directors, a Senior Systems Analyst, an Auditor, and an Assistant Legal Officer.

Before the inquiry began, the LGA team held a meeting with both the Mayor and the Secretary General of the Thinadhoo Council to explain the investigation process and the steps to be followed.

In addition to this inquiry, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had also visited the Thinadhoo Council offices earlier in January. During their visit, the ACC seized materials relevant to an ongoing investigation involving the council.

That same month, the Thinadhoo City Council attempted to seek applications for the island's 200 housing units. However, the Housing Ministry intervened, requesting that the council cancel the initiative as it was deemed beyond their legal authority. Additionally, the council had decided to charge a fee of MVR 5000 for residents wishing to transfer their registry to another island, a decision that was later deemed unlawful by the LGA's Board.

While the ACC has not disclosed the specific details of its investigation, reports suggest that it is examining six separate cases of alleged corruption within the Thinadhoo City Council.
