After the powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Bangkok and Myanmar on Friday afternoon, the Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been closely monitoring the situation. The ministry is coordinating with its embassy in Thailand to ensure the safety of Maldivian citizens in the affected regions.

The earthquake, which occurred at 10:30 AM Maldivian time, has not resulted in any reported casualties among Maldivians, according to Fuad Thaufeeq, the Maldives’ ambassador to Thailand, who spoke with Mihaaru News.

The Foreign Ministry confirmed that Maldivians residing in Thailand are safe, and they are using diplomatic channels to check on the whereabouts of Maldivians in Myanmar.

Approximately 150 Maldivians are officially registered with the embassy, although the ambassador estimates the actual number is likely higher, as Thailand remains a popular destination for Maldivians seeking medical treatment and shopping.

Embassy officials are actively reaching out to ensure that all Maldivians in Thailand are accounted for and safe.

In the aftermath of the earthquake, both Thailand and Myanmar have declared a state of emergency.

The Maldives Foreign Ministry has advised Maldivians in both countries to follow local authorities' guidance and safety instructions.

For any Maldivian in Thailand needing assistance or more information, the Ministry has provided contact details for the Maldivian Embassy at +66 611766502 or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at +960 7983400.
