A video circulating on social media has sparked outrage after it showed a man being publicly shamed in Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll, for allegedly committing theft. The footage captures the man being made to pour paint over himself, completely covering his head, face, and body, while being led outside by a group of people.
According to a representative from the Maafushi Island Council, who spoke to Mihaaru News, the man was accused of stealing from a local shop. Following the incident, he was taken into police custody.
Additional clips show the man sitting on the beach, struggling to wash off the paint, while individuals involved in the incident stand nearby. Eventually, law enforcement officers arrive and transport him away in a vehicle.
The video has triggered widespread condemnation online, with many labeling the treatment as degrading and inhumane. Critics argue that, regardless of the alleged crime, such actions are unjustifiable, especially when legal systems exist to handle these matters properly.
