A third detainee has reportedly attempted suicide while in custody at the Kulhudhuffushi Police Station, according to police officials. The individual was taken to Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital and has received medical treatment.
This marks the second such incident in just one week and the third reported within the last month, raising serious concerns about detainee safety while under police supervision.
The first case involved a 34-year-old man who was arrested on April 2, 2025 for allegedly damaging property while intoxicated. Two days after his arrest, he was found hanging in his cell. He later died last Tuesday while receiving treatment for his injuries.
A second incident occurred last Monday, involving a 26-year-old man being held during an ongoing investigation. Police say he was discovered in time and transported to the regional hospital. Medical personnel confirmed that he has since been treated and released.
Authorities state that investigations into all three incidents are underway. Police have committed to sharing the findings with both the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives and the National Integrity Commission, and have assured that appropriate measures will follow.
