Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam revealed that the Maldivian government has disbursed MVR 1.6 billion to fishermen over the past five months.
During a PNC event on Tuesday night, Shiyam criticized the previous administration for increasing the government’s fish purchase price to MVR 25 per kilogram for political gain. He also noted that when President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu took office, the government was in debt to fishermen, owing more than MVR 250 million.
Shiyam explained that the current government had resolved this outstanding payment and, since November 15, 2024, issued a total of MVR 1.6 billion to the fishermen. He highlighted that under President Muizzu’s leadership, efforts have been made to ensure quicker payments to fishermen, with the most recent payments being processed within 48 hours following Fishermen’s Day.
"The President has closely monitored the financial transactions, and as of now, we have paid 500 million MVR," said Shiyam. This rapid payment system, which aligns with President Muizzu’s commitment, has been in effect since December 2024.
