The Ministry of Dhivehi Language and Culture recently engaged in discussions with the Maldives Police Service to explore the potential of incorporating traditional Maldivian poetry into psychological support programs for abuse victims. The talks, which took place yesterday, involved Minister Adam Naseer Ibrahim, senior police figures including Superintendent Anwar Naeem and Inspector Ibrahim Ashraf, as well as officials from the Police Victim Support Department. Several deputy and state ministers from the ministry were also in attendance.

A statement released by the ministry highlighted that the conversations focused on how elements of Maldivian cultural heritage—particularly its language and literary traditions—might be used to aid in emotional recovery for trauma survivors. The ministry reiterated its dedication to working alongside law enforcement in these efforts.

Minister Adam Naseer, a long-time advocate of poetry’s emotional and psychological value, reiterated his belief in its healing properties. He previously introduced the idea of poetry as a form of therapy during the Poets' Day event held in Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo the previous year. Citing examples from other nations, Naseer emphasized that poetry has been utilized globally as a supportive tool for those suffering from mental health issues, such as depression and chronic emotional distress.

Though structured therapy programs have not yet been launched, the ministry is collaborating with relevant organizations to evaluate the effectiveness of traditional Dhivehi poetry in clinical and community-based therapeutic settings. Naseer expressed hope that if successful, such initiatives would elevate the cultural and therapeutic significance of Dhivehi poetry within Maldivian society.

Both the ministry and the police stressed the importance of reviving cultural traditions as a path toward a more harmonious and safe community.
