President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has declared that the government aims to make Raa Atoll’s Vaadhoo Island fully reliant on renewable energy by the end of this year.

During a 14-hour press conference yesterday, President Muizzu emphasized his administration's commitment to fostering investment in renewable energy. He revealed that several initiatives in this sector are already underway.

A key project involves turning Vaadhoo Island into a hub entirely powered by renewable energy. This initiative was first revealed during the President’s visit to Vaadhoo in January.

"We have committed to transforming Vaadhoo Island into a solar-powered community. The residents of Vaadhoo have already demonstrated creativity and innovation in this area," the President remarked.

"We’ve decided to designate the island as a model for such initiatives and ensure it runs entirely on solar energy by the end of this year."

President Muizzu mentioned that the project is now ready for the selection of a contractor.

"We are excited to see this become a pilot project and hope it will serve as a template for transitioning other islands to solar energy," he added.

The President also reaffirmed a pledge to achieve 33 percent renewable energy generation by 2028, aiming to reduce the Maldives' reliance on oil.

Additionally, the government is planning a significant renewable energy initiative for the Greater Malé Area. The "Floating Solar" project, set for a lagoon in the Malé Atoll, is projected to generate 100 to 150 MW of solar power. In March, the government began seeking contractors for this project.
