Ahmed Shifan, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, has been removed from his role as the chief spokesperson for the Maldives Police Service.
Sun has discovered that Shifan has been succeeded by Superintendent of Police Arif, who has held senior roles in different areas of the police service.
Shifan’s departure from the position follows his extensive tenure as the institution's public representative.
Significantly, severe accusations concerning Shifan were presented to Parliament’s Committee on National Security Services (241 Committee) last November, encompassing allegations of wrongdoing and the misuse of his official role.
The accusations were presented to the 241 Committee in a letter endorsed by 11 high-ranking police officers, each higher than the Chief Inspector level. The letter states that the inquiry into the accusations against Shifan, who is alleged to have tried to set up two senior police officers, was hindered because of his close ties to Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim, who recently resigned as deputy parliament speaker in light of a no-confidence motion.
Nonetheless, Shifan has firmly rejected these allegations, labeling them as personal assaults. He has additionally claimed that another Assistant Commissioner manipulated his official records to insert inaccurate information.
