A Goan-built vessel will assist the Maldives with maritime research and environmental preservation.

According to a senior Vijai Marine Services official, the ship can sail up to 100 nautical miles and will be utilized for surveillance and research.


Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant handed over a catamaran manufactured by a private shipyard in Goa to the Maldives government on Monday. The 30-meter-long "Thimaaveshi" catamaran, built by Vijai Marine Services, was handed over to Maldives government representatives at a ceremony here.


Sawant claimed that this is India's largest catamaran vessel. Funded by the World Bank (WB), the vessel  Thimaaveshi – will help the Maldivian Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology to track the effects of climate change, impact on coral reefs and fisheries


"Handing over this vessel to the Maldives Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology indicates the strength of the 'Make in India' initiative," the chief minister remarked.


Since 1961, Goa's maritime industry has contributed to this sector. Sawant went on to say that handing over the catamaran to the Maldives government  is a proud occasion for the country. On Tuesday, representatives from the Maldives government will transfer the vessel to their country.


The ship can travel up to 100 nautical miles in the sea and will be used for monitoring and research, a senior Vijai Marine Services official said.
