President Dr. Muizzu Has Appointed the New Cabinet

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, inaugurated into office on Friday, has assembled his Cabinet.


The members of his cabinet were designated during a ceremony at the President’s Office on Friday night, with Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan administering their oath.


Muizzu has formed a 22-member Cabinet, introducing some entirely new ministries. 




ATTORNEY GENERAL: AHMED USHAM


Ahmed Usham, the current Vilimale’ MP and an attorney-at-law, obtained his Bachelor of Law from the University of West England.


Having previously held roles such as Deputy Solicitor General at the Attorney General’s Office and Deputy Attorney General, Usham contested the 2019 parliamentary elections independently before joining the Maldives National Party (MNP) alongside MP Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim and MP Abdulla Riyaz.


He currently serves as the party’s deputy leader. 




MINISTER OF HOMELAND, SECURITY AND TECHNOLOGY: ALI IHUSAN


Ali Ihusan, a former member of the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) who entered politics in 2021, resigned from the force after a decade of service.


He holds a Bachelor of Defense and Strategic Studies from the United States Military Academy West Point and a Master of Business Administration from Singapore’s Nanyang Business School. 




MINISTER OF DEFENSE: GHASSAN MAUMOON


Ghassan Maumoon is the son of former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.


Currently the incumbent Th. Guraidhoo MP, Ghassan studied Molecular Biology and Biomedical Sciences at King's College London. 




MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS: MOOSA ZAMEER


A close associate of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom, Moosa Zameer served on Yameen’s cabinet as Tourism Minister from 2015 to 2018.


Zameer, who also held the position of Kinbidhoo MP from 2009 to 2014, received his Bachelor of Business Management from the University of Sunderland and his Master of Business Administration from Cardiff Metropolitan University. 




MINISTER OF FINANCE: DR. MOHAMED SHAFEEQ


Dr. Mohamed Shafeeq, currently serving as the Chief Financial Officer of Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC), assumed the position in 2021 after joining the corporation in 2009.


He earned his PhD in Business Administration from the IIC University of Technology, Cambodia, through the European Institute of Professional Education in Sri Lanka. 




MINISTER OF HOUSING, LAND AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT: DR. ALI HAIDER


Dr. Ali Haider served as Housing Minister for a brief three months at the end of Maumoon’s administration. He endorsed Muizzu in the 2021 Male’ City Mayor election.


He earned his Bachelor in Town and Country Planning from the University of Manchester and his PhD in Planning Studies from University College London. 




MINISTER OF CONSTRUCTION AND INFRASTRUCTURE: DR. ABDULLA MUTHALIB


Dr. Abdulla Muthalib, who previously served as Muizzu’s deputy during his time as Housing Minister in Yameen’s administration, holds a PhD in Engineering from the University College London. 




MINISTER OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND TRADE: MOHAMED SAEED


Mohamed Saeed, who served as Economic Minister during Yameen’s administration, is the current Maavah MP and deputy leader of the PNC.


Saeed earned his Master of Tourism and Hospitality from the University of Birmingham. 




MINISTER OF TOURISM: IBRAHIM FAISAL


Ibrahim Faisal, son of PNC chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdulla, previously worked at the Maldivian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.


A member of PNC’s senate, Faisal studied in Malaysia. 




MINISTER OF HEALTH: DR. ABDULLA KHALEEL


Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, a former Nilandhoo MP and Director General at the Civil Service Commission, as well as Secretary General at PPM, holds a PhD in Public Policy earned in 2015. 




MINISTER OF EDUCATION: DR. ISMAIL SHAFEEU


Dr. Ismail Shafeeu, former State Minister for Education during Yameen’s administration, became the Dean of the Islamic University of Maldives’ Center for Research and Publication in 2020.


He holds a Bachelor of Teaching from the Maldives National University, a Master of Educational Management from Universiti Malaya, and a PhD from Durham University. 




MINISTER OF HIGHER EDUCATION, LABOR AND SKILLS DEVELOPMENT: DR. MARIYAM MARIYA


Dr. Mariyam Mariya, with a background in education, holds a Masters from the University of Canberra and a PhD from Massey University.


Having worked in various educational institutes, including Villa College, Islamic University of Maldives, and Maldives National University, she is now the Minister of Higher Education, Labor, and Skills Development. 




MINISTER OF CITIES, LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND PUBLIC WORKS: ADAM SHAREEF UMAR


Adam Shareef Umar, deputy leader of PNC and incumbent Maduvvari MP, served as Defense Minister during Yameen’s administration and previously as Deputy Education Minister.


He earned his Master of Education from the University of East London. 




MINISTER OF SPORTS, FITNESS AND RECREATION: ABDULLA RAFIU


Abdulla Rafiu, a rehabilitation specialist, worked as a physician for the national football team and other national athletic teams participating in international sports tournaments.


He studied Sports Physiotherapy and Sports Physician courses at the India Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. 




MINISTER OF ISLAMIC AFFAIRS: DR. MOHAMED SHAHEEM ALI SAEED


Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, who served as Islamic Minister from 2012-2015 and was Yameen’s running mate in the 2018 presidential election, holds a Bachelor of Islamic Sharia from the University of Medina and a PhD from the International Islamic University Malaysia. 




MINISTER OF YOUTH EMPOWERMENT, INFORMATION AND ARTS: IBRAHIM WAHEED (ASWARD)


Ibrahim Waheed (Asward), CEO of SanguTV and former Deputy CEO of RaajjeTV, ran in the MDP primary for the 2014 parliamentary elections. He later left the MDP and contested the Thulusdhoo parliamentary seat on an MTD ticket.


He received his higher education in journalism. 




MINISTER OF TRANSPORT AND CIVIL AVIATION: MOHAMED AMEEN (CAPTAIN AMEEN)


Mohamed Ameen (Captain Ameen), who served as the campaign manager for both Yameen and Muizzu, brings 26 years of experience in the aviation sector. He was previously the Operations Director at Island Aviation. 




MINISTER OF TRANSPORT AND CIVIL AVIATION: DR. AISHATH SHIHAM


Dr. Aishath Shiham, former Education Minister during Yameen’s administration, holds a Bachelor of Guidance and Counselling from the University of South Pacific, a Master of Counselling Psychology from Macquarie University, and a PhD in Psychology from the University of New Castle. 




MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE AND ANIMAL WELFARE: DR. AISHATH RAMEELA


Dr. Aishath Rameela, former State Minister for Health during Yameen’s administration, holds a PhD and has served in roles such as State Minister for Gender and Registrar at the Maldives Medical and Dental Council. 




MINISTER OF CLIMATE CHANGE, ENVIRONMENT AND ENERGY: IBRAHIM TORIQ


Ibrahim Toriq, former Environment Minister during Yameen’s administration, holds a Bachelor of Engineering from Loughborough University of Technology, a Master of Sciences from Singapore National University, and an MBA from Preston University. 




MINISTER OF FISHERIES AND OCEAN RESOURCES: AHMED SHIYAM


Ahmed Shiyam, the current Naifaru MP and deputy leader of PPM, is in his second term as Naifaru MP. He spent his early years in the tourism sector as a diver. 




MINISTER OF DHIVEHI LANGUAGE, CULTURE AND HERITAGE: ADAM NASEER IBRAHIM


Adam Naseer Ibrahim, with extensive experience in Dhivehi language and literature, will lead a newly established ministry.


Recipient of the National Youth Award in 2007 for his contributions to poetry and literature, Naseer has served as a lecturer at the Islamic University of Maldives for over 29 years.
