The Ministry of Health has announced that over 4,000 students have participated in Thalassemia screening as part of a nationwide campaign aimed at increasing public awareness of the condition.

As of now, a total of 4,004 students have been screened for Thalassemia from January to the present date. In addition to the screenings, awareness sessions have been conducted at various schools, engaging 124 parents and 198 students in educational discussions. These programs have also extended to other ministries and administrative offices to broaden outreach.

Launched on February 4, 2024, the national campaign seeks to reduce the birth rate of children afflicted with Thalassemia by providing vital information to students and parents alike. The initiative commenced at Arabiyya School, marking the first school to participate in this important program. The first phase of the campaign has been implemented by the health ministry in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Maldivian Blood Service (MBS).

This initiative signifies a proactive approach to combating Thalassemia and ensuring that the community is well-informed about its implications and management.
