During an Interview for Public Service Media (PSM), Captain Saeed, the former Managing Director and CEO of Maldives State Shipping (MSS) and State Trading Organization (STO), has expressed optimism regarding the potential income from the newly initiated bunkering service in Upper North. He points out that changing shopping routes and the longer travel distances required, particularly influenced by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, have created an increased need for fueling during these extended journeys.
With new destinations offering bunkering, the Maldives could potentially earn more than initially projected. Captain Saeed's expertise in the shipping industry underlines the strategic importance of this initiative, which is spearheaded by Uthuru Marine Service (UMS) in conjunction with Maldives Ports Limited (MPL).
Last week, MPL's CEO, Mr. Wajeeh, confirmed that all necessary preparations to commence operations in Upper North are in place. He acknowledged the full support received from the government, particularly from STO and other relevant authorities, which is essential for the successful launch and sustainability of the bunkering services.
The introduction of these services is not only expected to boost revenue for the Maldives but also to enhance the country's position as a vital refueling hub in the region. Captain Saeed’s insights signal a promising outlook for the shipping and tourism sectors, given the changing dynamics of trade and travel in response to global events.
