Abbas Shareef, Hailam, and Adam Shameem have expressed their interest in the position of Prosecutor General (PG) following the resignation of Hussain Shameem last month. His resignation came just before the parliament was set to take action for his removal, highlighting a contentious period in the office. The current government had been critical of Hussain Shameem’s decisions, leading many to believe his resignation was a proactive move to avoid a formal removal, however the process was carried and the Parliament formally dismissed him on August 22.
Currently, there are three prominent legal professionals vying for the vacant position of Prosecutor General. Among them is Abbas Shareef, the current legal secretary at the President's Office, who previously served as a judge at the High Court and a close ally of the current Atorney General which connects the dots. Additionally, former Criminal Court Judge Hailam and lawyer Adam Shameem have also shown interest in the role, indicating their commitment to clearing their records to apply for the post.
The upcoming appointment is highly anticipated as it will shape the future conduct of the Prosecutor General's office, particularly following the recent controversy. The government’s evaluation of the candidates will be closely watched in the context of the ongoing discussions about judicial integrity and accountability in the Maldives.
