In a decisive move, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced on Monday his decision to ban the import and use of vaping products throughout the Maldives. This announcement was made via a post on X, signaling a firm stance against the increasing popularity of vaping, particularly among younger demographics.
The President stated that the importation of vaping devices and their components will be prohibited starting from November 15, 2024. Furthermore, he directed all relevant authorities to take immediate actions to prohibit not only the use and possession of vaping products but also their production, sale, advertisement, and free distribution. This comprehensive ban will come into effect on December 15, 2024.
This decision aligns with growing concerns from various health organizations regarding the rising prevalence of vaping. Notable advocates for the ban include the Maldives Doctors Association, Maldives Medical Association, Maldives Nurses Association, and 21 sports associations, all of which have been vocal in their calls for stricter regulations on tobacco products, especially e-cigarettes and vapes.
The urgency of this ban is underscored by a 2019 survey conducted by the Health Protection Agency (HPA), which revealed a concerning trend: 17.1 percent of children aged 13 to 15 reported having used vaping products. Experts speculate that this figure has likely doubled or tripled in the intervening years, heightening the need for immediate action.
As the Maldives prepares to implement these significant changes, the focus will be on safeguarding the health of its youth and curbing the rapid rise of vaping within the community.
