The construction of a 100-bed tertiary hospital in Vilimale’ is projected to be completed by 2027, as announced by Infrastructure Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthalib. This significant healthcare project is being funded by the Chinese government.

In May 2024, the Maldives and China signed a letter of exchange to initiate a feasibility study for the hospital. The Infrastructure Ministry has confirmed that this study has now been completed. Following this, Minister Muthalib and Chinese Ambassador Wang Lixin signed a memorandum outlining the findings, which paves the way for the next phases of the project—design and procurement.

At the signing ceremony, Minister Muthalib conveyed that the design and tendering process is anticipated to take around six months. During this period, Beijing will also identify a contractor for the project via a bidding process. Construction is expected to commence in 2025 and be finished within two years, with hopes for the hospital to be operational by 2027.

Ambassador Wang highlighted Beijing’s ongoing commitment to supporting the project, stating, "The Chinese government is always ready to do what we can to help facilitate this project."

The need for the new hospital is critical, as Vilimale’ is home to over 15,000 residents, yet the existing medical facility only provides five emergency beds and three inpatient rooms. This inadequate capacity currently necessitates that patients travel to Male’ for more comprehensive medical care. The new facility is expected to significantly enhance healthcare access and services for the community.
