As the newly established cat shelter prepares to open its doors in the coming days, Mayor Azim took a proactive step by meeting with various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) dedicated to the welfare of felines. Throughout the meeting, he attentively listened to the concerns presented by these NGOs, emphasizing his commitment to translating their needs into actionable outcomes.

The issue of stray cats is prevalent, with numerous felines often found hidden in parking lots and along streets throughout the Greater Malé Region. The escalating stray cat population poses significant challenges, as these animals reproduce at a rapid pace when left unattended.

This growing population has led to a variety of societal issues, including instances of violence against stray cats, the spread of diseases among these animals, and concerns regarding public hygiene, particularly as many residents feed cats in public areas.

Stray cats are not solely a concern for the capital; many islands are also experiencing rising populations of feral cats. The NGOs are actively seeking assistance and workable solutions to this growing problem.

During his campaign for Mayor of Malé City, Azim pledged to establish a cat shelter—an initiative that resonated with other candidates in both the Presidential and Mayoral elections. He has also proposed creating a cat park equipped with essential services, including a veterinary clinic, to ensure the wellbeing of these animals.

While Mayor Azim acknowledged that the practical implementation of these facilities may require time, he expressed a steadfast commitment to prioritizing immediate actions. These actions include the creation of a temporary shelter and the initiation of a neutering program aimed at controlling the stray cat population.

By having the opinions from NGOs and implementing effective strategies, Mayor Azim aims to foster a more humane environment for stray cats, enhancing both animal welfare and public health standards in the Maldives.
