MIOT Hospital, a multispecialty facility in Chennai, India, recently hosted its “Connect MIOT” event in the Maldives, aiming to foster collaboration with local doctors and introduce its genicular artery embolization treatment.
The session included detailed presentations on the procedure, case studies, and a Q&A segment to provide Maldivian health workers with comprehensive insights into the treatment.
Genicular artery embolization is a minimally invasive alternative to knee joint replacement for patients with osteoarthritis. Using interventional radiology, the procedure blocks specific blood vessels transmitting pain to the knee joint. Conducted under anesthesia, it offers pain relief within two days, restoring pain-free mobility for two to three years.
The treatment, successfully practiced for two years, is particularly beneficial for elderly patients and individuals with complications such as diabetes or obesity, making traditional surgery unsuitable.
Dr. Prithvi Mohandas, Managing Director of MIOT Hospital, emphasized the importance of knowledge-sharing with Maldivian doctors, highlighting the hospital’s readiness to introduce this procedure in the Maldives, where knee arthritis is prevalent.
“Only a cath lab is required to begin this service, and such facilities are already available in Maldivian hospitals,” said Dr. Prithvi. He further offered training for Maldivian doctors to perform the procedure and expressed MIOT’s commitment to enhancing healthcare in the region.
“MIOT not only treats patients but also trains doctors. We equip them to introduce our services worldwide and even station our medical teams in some countries,” he added.
Dr. Prithvi noted that several Maldivian patients have already undergone the procedure at MIOT Hospital. The hospital has been a key partner in advancing healthcare in the Maldives, including its collaboration with IGMH. Aasandha coverage is also available for Maldivian patients at MIOT.
