The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has decided to review the results of its recent monument design competition following allegations that the winning designs were created using Artificial Intelligence (AI). The monuments were intended for 17 roundabouts in Hulhumalé to improve traffic flow.

The competition, launched in September, carried the theme Dhivehinge Raajje (Maldivians' Maldives) and offered a cash prize of MVR 100,000 for the best submission. However, after announcing the winners yesterday, social media erupted with criticism, with many accusing the winners of using AI to generate their designs. Critics argued this undermined the efforts of participants who had dedicated genuine creative input.

HDC confirmed that seven parties had submitted entries for the competition, which were evaluated by a panel of professional judges. In response to the complaints, the corporation has announced it will re-evaluate the winning submissions to ensure the process aligns with the competition’s objectives.

In a statement, HDC reiterated that the competition was aimed at showcasing the creativity of Dhivehi artists and ensuring opportunities for local talent. The corporation also emphasized its commitment to transparency and welcomed public feedback to enhance such initiatives.
