In the investigation into the wrongful allocation of flats under the Gedhoruveriya housing scheme, charges are set to be filed against senior officials from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)-led Housing Ministry at the time, Mihaaru News reports.
According to a senior official from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), those facing charges include former State Minister Akram Kamaluddeen, former Senior Executive Directors Mohamed Arif and Lirgam Waheed, and the current and former Director General Ahmed Vishan Naseem. The ACC has indicated that a decision regarding pressing charges against these individuals will be reached soon.
Last week, the passports of these four officials were seized at the request of the ACC. They are also implicated in the ongoing Binveriya housing scheme investigation, which involves similar allegations of wrongful allocation of housing.
In a press release issued last night, the ACC stated that it is currently collaborating with the Prosecutor General's Office to expedite the prosecution process.
The ACC conducted a comprehensive investigation into the Gedhoruveriya housing scheme, revealing that only 20 percent of the initial 4,000 flat recipients were valid. As a result, the ACC directed the Housing Ministry under the current administration to review the allocation list. The Housing Ministry has since begun reviewing all 20,000 applicants from the first round.
In a related development, the Prosecutor General's Office has instructed the ACC and police to investigate allegations of undue awarding of flats and land under both the Gedhoruveriya and Binveriya housing schemes. These investigations aim to ensure accountability and transparency in the allocation of public housing resources.
