The Maldives Police Service has launched an investigation into allegations that officers compelled a journalist to delete photos captured during an arrest on a street in Malé last night.
Shama Shuaib, a journalist from Aslu TV, shared on social media that they were documenting the arrest around 8:26 PM and were carrying a press card. Despite presenting their credentials, an officer at the scene reportedly ordered them to delete the photos, threatening arrest if they refused. Under pressure, the journalist complied, later raising concerns about the incident as a violation of press freedom.
Responding to the situation, Police Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan stated that the priority at any active crime scene is to ensure proper operations, emphasizing that journalists are permitted to report from a safe and designated distance. He also confirmed that the Professional Standards Command would investigate the journalist's claims against the officer’s actions.
The individual arrested has been identified as Mohamed Azham Saeed from Gahdhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. Police acted on intelligence reports linking him to the sale of alcohol.
The case has sparked debate about balancing press freedom and operational security at active crime scenes, with many urging clarity on protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
