President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu emphasized the government’s commitment to expanding the agricultural sector during an event at GA. Nilandhoo as part of his three-day visit to Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu atolls. Highlighting agriculture as a cornerstone of economic diversification, he assured farmers of prosperity and significant improvements in the industry.
The President acknowledged local farmers’ requests for better marketing opportunities for their produce and emphasized the importance of finding viable solutions through government-owned companies. He noted that the previous administration’s initiative, Agronet, which facilitated the marketing of farmers' produce, has been dissolved, with its operations now transferred to the Maldives Industrial Freezone in collaboration with STO.
“It is a very important policy of ours to expand agriculture in the Maldives through Agronet or a similar system. Agriculture is an area receiving great attention as we work to diversify the country’s economy. Our plan is to elevate it significantly from its current state,” the President said during the meeting held at Nilandhoo School.
He further highlighted efforts to achieve food self-sufficiency and reiterated the government's prioritization of agricultural investment. “Happiness lies ahead for Maldivian farmers. Our main focus is to transform the agricultural industry into a well-functioning and expandable sector,” he said, underscoring the establishment of a dedicated ministry for agriculture as a testament to this commitment.
Beyond agriculture, President Muizzu also pledged to address several key development needs for Nilandhoo, including constructing a multipurpose hall for the school, establishing sports facilities, developing the harbour, and tackling erosion issues. These initiatives align with his broader vision for sustainable development and community well-being.
