Road Development Corporation (RDC) has started repair work on Ameenee Magu, focusing on the section in front of Maafannu Stadium where the tarred street has developed multiple potholes and other damage.
RDC workers began by digging up the affected area yesterday, and they will proceed with leveling the road and applying a fresh asphalt mixture.
The construction of Ameenee Magu was completed by RDC in 2022 during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The road repairs were finalized, and the street was opened for public use early last year. The project, which cost MVR 84 million from the State budget, faced criticism for alleged overpricing and the use of low-quality materials.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans for a broader reconstruction of roads in Malé and Vilimalé this year through a grant from China. A technical team from China visited late last year to conduct a feasibility study for the project.
Minister of Construction, Infrastructure, and Housing Dr. Abdulla Muththalib stated that the upcoming road reconstruction will provide a long-term solution to persistent issues such as flooding in these areas.
