The long-delayed cold storage facility in Gdh. Hoandedhoo is set to become operational within this year, according to Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam. The announcement was made during the minister's visit to Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu atolls last week, alongside the president.

The facility, established on a 13-hectare plot leased to Horizon Fisheries in 2005, has faced significant delays despite substantial investment and effort. Minister Shiyam acknowledged concerns about the prolonged inactivity of the facility, emphasizing that the local community has not yet benefitted from its services.

The lease agreement, which spans 35 years, requires Horizon Fisheries—owned by Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim—to pay a rent of 15 Laari per square foot. However, Hoandedhoo Council has raised concerns about the rental rate, proposing an increase to 20–60 Laari.

Minister Shiyam stressed the importance of operationalizing the facility to support local fishermen and create job opportunities. "It would be better for the fishermen in the area and those seeking job opportunities to make the facility operational rather than cancel the agreement and render it unusable," he said.

He highlighted the government’s commitment to fostering private sector participation in the fishing industry, noting the limited number of private companies currently involved. Foreign investors have also shown interest in expanding fish processing capacities, a development the minister attributed to the president’s efforts to create a supportive environment for the industry.

An independent evaluation of the cold storage facility has been conducted via Horizon Fisheries, providing valuable insights for discussions with external stakeholders. These efforts aim to ensure the facility's efficient operation and long-term contribution to the fisheries sector.

Minister Shiyam reaffirmed the government’s determination to operationalize the cold storage facility this year, aligning with broader goals to enhance the fishing industry and improve community benefits.
